If there were a grandfather of Performance Lifestyle, it would have to be Bruce Lee —the philosopher, martial artist, film star, action hero, originator, and innovator.
Simply put, Bruce Lee’s work provided the breakout philosophy that helped inspire the integrated lifestyle philosophy that a Performance Lifestyle represents.
Dissatisfied with his results after a fight, given he initially trained in only one style of Kung Fu at the time, Bruce ultimately developed the philosophy that would give rise to Jeet Kune Do—way of the intercepting fist.
“No way is the way,” meaning that you must be free mentally and physically to express yourself; however, you must.
“Having No Limitation As Limitation” means keep an open mind. Do not limit yourself or your thinking. Do not let your beliefs or your style restrict your experience. This lesson applies to combat as well as daily life.
Bruce Lee was rife with brilliant insights because he was a man who knew that “Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Willing is not enough; we must do.”
So, Bruce Lee lived every day in a state of action, grounding himself in experience, and that is, by definition, how you create a way of life.
It’s also where your confidence comes from, taking action, and gaining experience to find not the way, but your way.
“You must be shapeless, formless, like water. When you pour water into a cup, it becomes the cup. When you pour water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle. When you pour water into a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Water can drip, and it can crash. Become like water, my friend.”
But it goes even deeper here at the Performance Lifestyle Academy.
Bruce Lee pointed out that he never wanted to give his Martial Art (Jeet Kune Do), which he created, a name. Because he did not want to become or get locked into a fixed style of fighting. He also pointed out that what starts as some form of fluid motion, once the founder dies and students take over, becomes institutionalized into another fixed style of fighting.
What Bruce Lee was pointing to was really about where a person is ideally living— their posture to life. Living from the best version of yourself, he would have referred to as “water.”
He is famous for the quote above, which is also the title of his Daughter Shannon Lee’s new book, which came out on what would have been Bruce Lee’s 80th Birthday, on his teachings called “Be Water, My Friend.”
In a Performance Lifestyle, ultimately, you wanted to be living from the very best part of yourself, or “best version” of yourself, like water in a state of flow. With a Performance Lifestyle mindset and skillset, from that place, you can achieve even your most ambitious goals while living in balance with vibrant health and peace of mind.
You can only do that when applying the no way philosophy because you are continually understanding your present situation and circumstances and using the tools you learn in Performance Lifestyle training to achieve that mission.
Everything changes and can improve and optimize when you live as the water, free of fixed solutions’ rigidity, based on history alone.
Bruce’s philosophy is also said to be the foundation of today’s MMA— Mixed Martial Arts. Participants must learn jujitsu, wrestling, boxing, various martial arts, etc. In addition to intensive conditioning, they must bring the most varied capacities to the fight and respond to others who are training alike. It all started with philosophy by Bruce Lee.
Sure there are others with philosophies who’ve contributed to where and the art and science of lifestyle optimization (aka, Performance Lifestyle) has come. The same is true for MMA, for that matter. Still, none is more poignant than what Bruce Lee originated and innovated, and most importantly, lived!
